The Collective Marriage Matching Model: Identification, Estimation and Testing∗

چکیده
We develop and estimate an empirical collective model with endogenous marriage formation, participation, and family labor supply. Intrahousehold transfers arise endogenously as the transfers that clear the marriage market. The intra-household allocation can be recovered from observations on marriage decisions. Introducing the marriage market in the collective model allows us to independently estimate transfers from labor supplies and from marriage decisions. We estimate a semi-parametric version of our model using 2000 US Census data. Estimates of the model using marriage data are much more consistent with the theoretical predictions than estimates derived from labor supply. ∗We would like to thank Karim Chalak, Don Cox, Anyck Dauphin, Ryan Davies, Peter Gottschalk, Arthur Lewbel, and seminar participants at many seminars and conferences for helpful comments. An Empirical Model of Intra-Household Allocations and the Marriage Market∗ Preliminary
We develop and estimate an empirical collective matching model with endogenous marriage formation, participation, and labor supply decisions. The sharing rule in our collective matching model arises endogenously as a transfer that clears the marriage market. With information on at least two independent marriage markets, incorporating matching in the collective model allows us to identify the sh...

متن کاملCollective Animal Behavior from Bayesian Estimation and Probability Matching
Animals living in groups make movement decisions that depend, among other factors, on social interactions with other group members. Our present understanding of social rules in animal collectives is mainly based on empirical fits to observations, with less emphasis in obtaining first-principles approaches that allow their derivation. Here we show that patterns of collective decisions can be der...
متن کاملOn Identification of a Beckerian Marriage Matching Model
In this note, we study the identification of structural parameters in a simple marriage matching model with assortative matching and transferable utility. We show that an intuitive identification strategy runs into an indeterminacy problem. We then propose a solution to the problem based on random matching.
متن کاملLifecycle marriage matching: Theory and evidence∗
The marriage market is a dynamic bilateral matching market with finitely lived participants. The growth rate of the number of marriages between two types of individuals estimates the systematic benefit to them delaying marriage for a period versus marrying immediately. Identification of the semi-parametric model is transparent. The model is estimated with 1990 US marriage data. The estimated mo...
